Nestled amid the rugged beauty of the Mojave Desert, Tecopa, California, is home to a hidden oasis that beckons seekers of relaxation and natural tranquility – Borehole Spring. This unique geothermal gem, cradled within the desert landscape of Tecopa on Bureau of Land Management land, offers visitors a rustic therapeutic retreat, free of charge, inviting them to unwind in the warm embrace of mineral-rich mud and soothing waters.
Hot Springs Logistics
Water emerges at 110 degrees Fahrenheit from a depth of 350 feet and regularly averages between 100-103. The water is thought to be approximately 25,000 years old.
The Borehole is about a quarter mile walk from Tecopa Hot Springs Road over hardened sloping desert playa. It is advised to park and cross the road responsibly. When it rains, playa can easily turn to mud and become impossible to traverse.
A sign warns bathers of the potential existence of mud mites, and it is advised that bathers take a shower immediately after soaking. Because of frequent visitors, the water has also tested positive for E. coli.
Weather in Tecopa often includes high winds that cool down the water and on occasion winter rain storms, making the Borehole impassable and highly unenjoyable. The pools are clothing optional, please respect the privacy and space of those around you. Campfires are not advised, and have had devastating results.
Responsible Enjoyment: Preserving the Oasis
While the Borehole Hot Spring offers a serene escape, it is crucial for visitors to approach its waters with respect for the environment by Leaving No Trace – pack in and out all that you bring. Practicing responsible tourism ensures the preservation of this natural oasis for future generations. This includes minimizing human impact, refraining from leaving behind feces, litter, and adhering to the guidelines set forth. We hear that a request to BLM for a vault toilet has been delayed but could aid in keeping this majestic location beautiful and free of E. coli.
